Totally Tubular Trivia Night: Relive the 80s at La Cajun Mansion!

80s couple

The 80s trivia night at the Louisiana Cajun Mansion on February 23 was an unforgettable journey back in time, blending the vibrant culture of the 1980s with the distinctive charm of Louisiana. The mansion, known for its elegant architecture and warm hospitality, was transformed into a nostalgic paradise that evening, awash with neon lights and adorned with iconic memorabilia from the decade.

Tickets were purchased through EventBrite. The ticket price included an unlimited bar for Beer and Wine. There was also a cash bar set up for cocktails. Of course, dinner was served and boy did the staff of the Louisiana Cajun Mansion take it back to the 80s. Guests were treated to a traditional 80s Weekday Dinner Night. Manwich sandwiches, crispy tater tots, cold pasta salad and of course banana pudding complete with Nilla Wafers!”Totally Tubular Trivia Night: Relive the 80s at La Cajun Mansion!”

Guests were welcomed by the staff of the Louisiana Cajun Mansion who were dressed in 80s attire as well. The themes ranged from 80s Goth and Pop Culture to Head Banging Rock Bands and Rap attire. The Emcee of the night was the Mansion’s resident DJ, Dwayne Coots. Dwayne was the perfect candidate for the role. His antics and reference from the decade that was totally tubular were perfect for the guests that were just as eager to test their knowledge as he was to dish it out. Dwayne was armed with all the questions that radically took everyone back and brought back memories of MTV VJs and day-glow outfits.

gift card winnersOnce everyone had found their tables, which were appropriately named, Team Bon Jovi, Team Madonna, etc., Dwayne went over how the game would be played. He welcomed guests and set the tone for the evening with an energetic introduction. He explained how we would have several rounds, and the staff would retrieve the cards and then the correct answers would be given. If you have not guessed, each table was a team. He also explained the trivia rules, including how answers are to be submitted, the point system, and any specific guidelines for team play or individual participation.

Let The Games Begin

Once everyone was ready to start, rounds were issued to all the tables and the rad game began. Each question was given about 2-3 minutes to answer, but our very experienced groups did not need that much time. Most questions had multiple choice, so it was not as hard as one would think. Oh! and I forgot to mention that cell phones were kept in the center of the table so no one could search for the answers! I mean, we did not have smart phones back then!! And, we would have noticed if someone would have broken out an Encyclopedia!

Just to give you an example of the type of questions that were given: According to the hit 1981 song by Tommy Tutone, if you dialdwayne and susan 80s 867-5309, you will reach a woman with what first name? JENNY!!! Other subject matter included music, movies, fashion, historical events, and pop culture phenomena. Dwayne also did a great job interacting with the audience to keep energy levels high; this involved light-hearted banter with participants, sharing anecdotes related to the 80s, and encouraging friendly competition among teams.

During breaks for bar visits and bathrooms, there was a looped video playing on the large flat screen television in the mansion’s living80s group room. He would take the time to raise the volume and those on break would comment on the video or tell funny stories about what was going on in their life during that time. It definitely brought back some radical memories for all those there.

The staff would periodically announce who was in the lead, and as a way to keep the fun going, “sudden death” games were spontaneously announced. One example was: The first person to get up and do the moon walk correct wins a gift card to Bon Temps Grill! And you know we love Bon Temps Grill, after all, they are our in-house caterer for all our weddings and private events.  The winning table, Team Bowie, won by 1 point! They were so excited and admitted they were in it to win it!

Also, between rounds, guests were entertained with a mix of activities. A costume contest showcased the best of 80s fashion, with attendees donning everything from neon leg warmers and acid-wash jeans to shoulder pads and sequined dresses. An impromptu dance-off occurred on the makeshift dance floor set up in the mansion’s living room, as Dwayne spun classic 80s hits, from Michael Jackson to Madonna, setting the perfect backdrop for the evening’s festivities.

The event was not just a celebration of the 1980s but a testament to the enduring appeal of bringing together community, culture, and nostalgia in a setting as unique and welcoming as the mansion itself. And for those that wanted to experience the warmth and hospitality of the Louisiana Cajun Mansion, they stayed overnight. Yes, the mansion is also a Bed and Breakfast.
